  4. book has little to say about
  5. mechanisms in the brain that
  6. have been or might be
  7. uncovered by way of
  8. explanation of perception.
  9. Instead, I discuss, in
  10. nonphysiological language,
  11. theories of perception that
  12. describe the kind of process
  13. that might be assumed to occur
  14. when we have various
  15. perceptions. By analogy to
  16. computers, one might say that
  17. the first step in explaining
  18. mental events is to describe
  19. them in terms of the kind of
  20. processing that occurs
  21. (software) rather than in terms
  22. of the neurophysiological
  23. structures that can carry it out
  24. (hardware). The reasons for
  25. taking this approach are set
  26. forth in Chapter 1.
